Standard welded mesh fencing uses a 50mm x 150mm aperture, suited for general perimeter security. Anti-climb fencing uses a much tighter 12.5mm x 75mm aperture, too small for fingers or toes to get a grip, making it far harder to scale – commonly used for high-security sites like substations, factories, and other critical infrastructure.

The letter identifies the mesh pattern (A = square mesh, B = rectangular structural mesh, C = long mesh, DA = small square mesh) and the number is roughly the wire diameter in millimetres. For example, A10 (also called A393 under the older BS4483 standard) uses 10mm wires spaced 200mm apart in both directions, while A8 (A252) uses 8mm wire on the same 200mm grid. Hot-dip galvanized mesh is fabricated first, then dipped in molten zinc, so the coating covers every cut edge and weld joint for stronger corrosion resistance. Pre-galvanized (GI) mesh uses wire that’s already zinc-coated before welding, leaving cut ends exposed to rust sooner.
