Welded mesh and chain link are the two most common fencing types buyers compare when specifying a perimeter fence in Malaysia and Singapore. Both do the job of marking and securing a boundary, but they’re built differently, priced differently, and suited to different sites. Here’s how they actually compare.
Construction
Welded mesh fencing is made from thicker wire welded into a rigid grid, then fabricated into flat panels — it holds its shape and doesn’t sag or stretch over time. Chain link fencing is woven from thinner wire into a flexible diamond pattern and supplied in rolls, then tensioned between posts on site.
Strength and Security
Welded mesh uses thicker wire (typically 3.5mm–6mm) in a rigid panel, making it harder to cut, climb, or deform — the tight, welded grid doesn’t give footholds the way a diamond weave can. Chain link uses thinner wire (typically 2.0mm–4.0mm), and while it’s a durable, proven fencing type, the diamond gaps can offer toe- and finger-holds that make it easier to climb than a rigid welded panel, and the mesh can be pushed or cut open more easily since it isn’t welded at each intersection.

Cost and Installation
Chain link is generally the more budget-friendly option — thinner wire and a simpler manufacturing process keep material costs down, and rolls are fast to install over long, straight runs. Welded mesh costs more per metre, but rigid panels install cleanly panel-by-panel without the tensioning chain link needs, and they hold a straight, tidy line even on uneven ground.
Maintenance and Lifespan
Because welded mesh panels are typically hot-dip galvanized after welding, the weld points themselves get fully coated in zinc, which protects against rust starting at the joints. Chain link is usually pre-galvanized (coated before weaving) or PVC-coated, which gives solid general protection but doesn’t have the same weld-point coverage — though chain link has no welds to begin with, so this is less of a factor for it specifically. Over time, chain link can sag or loosen at the tension points and need re-tensioning; welded panels don’t.
When to Use Each
Choose chain link fencing for: budget-conscious projects, temporary or short-term fencing, sports courts, construction site perimeters, agricultural or large open-land boundaries where cost per metre matters most.
