Hot-Dip Galvanized vs GI Pre-Galvanized vs Powder Coated: Which Fence Finish Should You Choose?

Every Lensern welded mesh, anti-climb, and security fencing product is available in three finishing options: Hot-Dipped Galvanized, GI Pre-Galvanized (Pre-Gal), and Powder Coating. They can look similar on a spec sheet, but they perform very differently once a fence has been standing in Malaysian or Singaporean weather for a few years. Here’s how to choose.

Hot-Dipped Galvanized

In hot-dip galvanizing, the fully fabricated panel is dipped into a bath of molten zinc. The zinc bonds to the steel and coats every surface — including welds, joints, and any hard-to-reach corners — in a thick protective layer, typically well over 50 microns.

Because the coating is applied after fabrication and is metallurgically bonded to the steel, it holds up better to abrasion and impact than a thinner pre-applied coating, and it protects sacrificially: the zinc corrodes first, protecting the steel underneath even if the surface gets scratched. This makes it the strongest option for coastal sites, industrial areas, and any location with high humidity or salt exposure — both very common conditions in Malaysia and Singapore.

GI Pre-Galvanized (Pre-Gal)

Pre-galvanized wire is coated with zinc before the panel is welded together, rather than after. It gives good general corrosion resistance at a lower cost than hot-dip galvanizing, but the coating is thinner, and the cut ends and weld points created during fabrication aren’t re-coated afterward — these spots are more exposed to corrosion over time.

Pre-Gal is a solid, cost-effective choice for lower-exposure sites — general perimeter fencing away from the coast, budget-conscious projects, or shorter-term installations — where the highest level of long-term protection isn’t the deciding factor.

Micron vs GSM: How Coating Thickness Is Measured

Coating thickness on galvanized wire and fencing is usually described in one of two units: microns (µm) or GSM (grams per square metre, g/m²). They measure the same thing from two different angles — microns measure how physically thick the zinc layer is, while GSM measures how much zinc (by weight) sits on each square metre of surface. Since zinc has a known density, the two convert directly: roughly 1 micron of coating equals about 7.1 g/m².

As a general industry reference, hot-dip galvanizing (applied to the finished, fabricated panel) typically produces a coating in the range of roughly 45 to 100+ microns (around 320 to 700+ g/m²), while pre-galvanized wire (coated before welding) is usually thinner by design — commonly in the range of roughly 5 to 40 microns (around 30 to 275 g/m²), since it needs to stay flexible enough to be drawn and welded without the coating cracking. This is the main reason hot-dip galvanized fencing consistently measures a heavier coating than pre-galvanized fencing on a test report — it’s not a manufacturing inconsistency, it’s how each process is designed to work.

Powder Coating

Powder coating is a dry finishing process: a fine powder is electrostatically sprayed onto the panel and then baked, fusing into a smooth, even, durable colored finish. On its own, powder coating is a barrier system — it seals the steel from air and moisture but doesn’t offer the sacrificial protection that galvanizing does, so it’s usually applied over a galvanized base for the best of both: strong corrosion resistance plus a clean architectural finish.

Powder coating is the go-to option when appearance matters as much as protection — residential perimeters, commercial frontages, parks, and any site where the fence needs to match a specific colour scheme.
